The big riddle contest!
This contest was won in May of 2000 by the mega-smarties Helen T and Amanda L. . Their prize is a sestina on the topic of their choice. I'm still a workin' on it, check back in a week or two to see it.
The first four are traditional ones that were written by me:
Riddle the first
I have a good friend who's as kind as can be
I needed one so he gave one to me
If he gave me another, then he'd be a fool
The answer is found in a casual pool
Riddle the second
See the twins and the triplets and you're overjoyed
But a laugh or a smile you choose to avoid
The twins act as single, at least they do try
The thing is as funny as a poke in the eye.
Riddle the third
Several Greek letters
standing in lines
They got up, one pulls oars
And they smell oh so fine.
Riddle the fourth
The loudest you can make your voice
Mix it up, you've made a choice
Now put it back, this ain't a joke
You do it wrong, you have a smoke.
I also made up a short one that I like:
Riddle the fifth
In what context are the words "wide" and "sound" opposites?
My friend, Auntie Mae is also an excellent riddlist, and she gave me permission to include the following gems that she sent:
Riddle the sixth
The committee members,
listless and lank
picked up their tools
and drilled holes in a plank.
Riddle the seventh
Cowboys' horses, bucking wild
Across a river they slowly filed
To the scene of John's crime
For the thirty-eighth time.
Riddle the eighth
What can get through it
Invisible, with a lock?
Everything and nothing
(except, maybe, a rock).
Riddle the ninth
It helps her to breathe
And not to conceive
Riddle the tenth
anything at all
captured at sea
null 'n' void
instructed at tea.
Feel free to submit your riddles to this space. When we get ten, then it will be time to hold another wonderful contest!
