University of Northern Iowa mathematics department presents state-wide high school/college mathematics contest

 

Cedar Falls, Iowa USA - September 2000:

All Iowa high school students and University of Northern Iowa college students are invited to participate in The Wright Challenge, a web-accessible mathematics contest now entering its 2nd year.  Between now and December 15, the mysterious Doctor E will present six interesting puzzles, roughly one every other week.  These challenges can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.math.uni.edu/~shaw/doctore, printed in the Northern Iowan, and posted on the University of Northern Iowa campus.  The first problem is currently available and the solution is due on October 10.  The answers can be emailed to doctore@math.uni.edu, or sent to:  Doctor E, c/o the University of Northern Iowa Mathematics Department, 317 Wright Hall, Cedar Falls, IA 50614-0506.

Prizes will include handsome certificates, suitable for framing, over $100 in cash, and quality games donated by Kadon Enterprises, a high-end puzzle merchant (http://www.gamepuzzles.com).

The University of Northern Iowa math department is sponsoring this contest for the second year in a row in order to encourage Iowa students’ enthusiasm for mathematics and to share their love of the subject with the community at large.

The Wright Challenge is the creation of Professor Douglas Shaw, an accomplished mathematician and winner of several teaching awards.  Thirty-six years old and ruggedly handsome, Dr. Shaw is looking forward to these contests becoming an honored Iowa tradition.
