I've lost track of how many times I've tried to read this thing.

I was at the library, and stumbled on this.

My brain whispered, "it's a classic! Maybe you've grown up enough to finally appreciate it! Other people have loved it!" etc etc.

So I checked it out.

It's still boring. I'm sure I'm supposed to see the irony of worshipping an engineer from the time before the nuclear war (or whatever it all is). I do, to an extent. But it feels very much like a short story that was awesome, and then the author tried to stretch it into a full novel. I also dislike most of the characters, and the religious focus.

Maybe it picks up past the halfway point. I'll never know.

As it is, the book's due back today. I looked at it, thought about renewal, and said "Meh."

Interesting. I like this one, and it is a classic. And yet given my recent experiences with books others like so much, I am more than willing to concede that you need not like it, nor even finish it.

We seem to be a grumpy group of critics of late. Smile

Heh.. possibly. Maybe it's just because I'm reading library books. I seem to really enjoy maybe 25% of the books I check out.
