Doug reviewed this book at some point in his Top 100 quest; as he mentions there, the subject is roughly "Can an Englishman and an Indian be friends?". The book was written in the 1920s --- a time when many English would have said "Why would they want to be?"
The book outlines the difficulties in cross-cultural friendships in a very skillful way. I found myself sensing an undercurrent of sadness through the entire book, as well as frustration in that people just keep misunderstanding each other because of how different cultures interpret things. Nevertheless, there is always a ray of hope discernible amongst the turmoil. _________________ Todd Eisworth
