1. 23 Days in July by John Wilcockson

It’s cold and snowing in NH right now and I want to be out there riding and racing my bike. I did the next best thing, reading about Lance Armstrong’s 6th Tour de France victory in 2004. It’s more “just the facts, ma’am” than Daniel Coyle’s book, which is more opinionated. For those interested in this topic, I still recommend Coyle’s book.

This is my first book for 2006. In 2005 I started out ambitiously reading Shebly Foote’s 3 volume massive Civil War narrative and wound up giving up on it. While he was an authority on the topic (r.i.p. by the way, he passed away last summer) his clever, folksy writing style drove me crazy and I wound up selling the set. This year, Doris Kearns Goodwin just came out with a huge new biography of Abraham Lincoln and I intend to read it. Will Goodwin’s book be the “Civil War” of 2006 for me? Tune in and find out!

If you're interested in biography/history, allow me to recommend the best books I've ever read in that Genre. America in the Martin Luther King years, by Taylor Branch. Awesome writing, and constantly interesting. I just hope he comes out with volume 3 while I'm still alive.

Unless you died in the last week, you should be OK. See here.
