Augusten Burroughs is a talented memoir writer; however, after Running with Scissors, and now, Dry I am truly fascinated to know how much of these memoirs are true. Because if they are 100% truthful - this man has lead an amazing life and is truly lucky to be alive - for a variety of reasons.
Dry is a bitingly witty and often tear-jerkingly tragic story of Augusten's decent into Alcoholism; his initial recovery and then relapse after the death of his best friend. It is brutal and ugly in places. It is laugh-out-loud funny in others. I cried at least three times while reading this book. And, it is possibly the most clear depiction of addiction that I've ever read. The way that the author depicts struggling against the desire to drink and how addiction feels... well, I've never been addicted to anything save cigarettes and I could clearly and palpably understand what the protagonist was going through.
I liked this much better than Running with Scissors - which disturbed me - this disturbed me, too... but, in the end I felt hopeful for Augusten. _________________ HER ROYAL KATENESS, QUEEN OF ALL SHE SURVEYS |
