Prep is the story of Lee Fiora - a smart young woman from Indiana who leaves her family behind at the age of 14 to attend the prestigious Ault School. The story revolves around Lee's struggle to fit into not only her high school community; but, a high school community which is populated by over-privileged, wealthy teenagers. Her struggles with her own identity and her constant feeling of inadequacy are often heartbreaking - they pulled me in and reminded me of how badly it sucked to be a teenager.
I wish the story had ended in a more cohesive manner - the suddenness of the events which conclude Lee's story are somewhat unsatisfying and feel forced. Someone asked me if I though this book held up to the hype of it's reviews - I think it did up until the last third of the book. In the first two thirds Sittenfeld did an admirable job of writing an authentic young female character... in the last third the voice and decisions the character made reflected what I felt would be what a young man would hope a young woman would think and/or do.
Disappointing. But, still entertaining. _________________ HER ROYAL KATENESS, QUEEN OF ALL SHE SURVEYS |
