There are too many reviews of this already for me to get lengthy.

I liked it, I had to buy it, and I want to read the next in the trilogy. An earlier review convinced me to read it, and I'm glad because it's not my normal genre. It could be called historical fantasy with the emphasis on history; the fantasy is there as a solid object, but much less time is spent shouting "hey look, there's weird unworldly stuff over here, pay attention pay attention!" and more time is spent showing history happening and plots and timelines developing.

That's one of the things I loved about this series: it's a fantasy setting, but the fantastic-ness is on the down low, and it has a story that would be gripping in any genre or setting.

You were taken in by the same lie I was - I think it was that crack-dealer Dev, but I don't remember.

It isn't a trilogy. I read some stuff on the 'net and you get to see this timeline

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: Five books, I think.
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: Five long books.
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: Six, maybe, but that is IT
GEORGE R.R. MARTIN: I'm thinking Seven.

Each book that is out is great though, so no big deal. If he ever finishes this series, and keeps the quality up, I think this will be a major historic work of fantasy that will be up there with the great literary acheivements of Epic.
