I was interested in reading this book because of the controversy surrounding it a year or so ago. This is supposed to be a true account of Frey's recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, but as it turns out, a lot of the stuff is made up.

Knowing that there was this controversy going into the book, I wasn't as emotionally affected by it. Or maybe I wouldn't have been all that emotionally affected anyway. I guess I was also a little confused about why Frey was even agreeing to go into rehab. He wasn't at all agreeable, and didn't even act like he wanted to commit to coming clean.

The writing style used in the book has been called "stream of consciousness". It was very distracting, in my opinion. I often found myself speeding through certain areas where things were repeated over and over.

I don't know a lot about any drugs other than alcohol. Nor do I know very much about what being addicted to them or getting over an addiction would be like. I didn't feel like this book gave a lot of information in that sense. It was obvious that Frey was sick, and that he threw up, but other than that, his symptoms during recovery weren't discussed very much. If anything, this was a lot more about him dealing with an anger that he had felt throughout his entire life. There was also a small romantic plotline, but that felt pushed to me.

It was an okay book. It was a quick read, and I never got very attached. What I read afterward about the things in the book that were not true didn't really affect how I felt about it. Because I had known that parts of it weren't true, I didn't feel like I'd been lied to. Overall though, I'd have to say that there are better things out there to be reading.
