This book is a sequel to The Onion Girl.
Since the book jacket reveals it, it's not a spoiler to say this is supposed to be the book in which Jilly and Geordie (two recurring characters in the Newford mythology) finally get together as a couple.
It's too bad this is what's being trumpeted about the book, because it's given very short shrift in favor of a "save-the-world -from-the-rampaging-vengeful-buffalo-spirits" theme. Somewhere in there, Jilly gets to lay the rest of her childhood demons to rest. But yeah.. very little romance, and although I hate most romantic stories, I was hoping more would have been done with it in this book. I feel like I was kinda robbed.
In any case, I'm finding myself getting a wee bit tired of the Newford setting. It's difficult to put my finger on.. maybe it's the same problem I had with "The Blue Girl". I get the feeling he's writing more for his fans than himself now. I could be wrong. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book, it just seems to be missing *something* I can't quite figure out.
I'd recommend this book, at least as a library checkout, but only if you've been keeping on top of the Newford novels. Otherwise, it might be rather confusing to try to jump in here.
I'm glad I got this from the library - I don't think I want a copy for my bookshelf. |
