I was sick, and wanted comfort reading. This book has been reviewed at least twice so far, so I won't go into the plot.
I've read it several times. The comparisons to the movie are inevitable, but all I want to say about it is I tend to see it like I see Princess Bride: both are great adaptations, but the books have more depth to them. The reason I see them as great adaptations is because they keep the spirit of the original book intact (possibly because the screenwriters were also the authors). [According to Wikipedia, The Princess Bride is all William Goldman's work, and the bit about S. Morgenstern and the "original book" is an invention.]
I understand why a lot of the side stories were left out of the movie (i.e. the stories about Whistle Stop characters when they were away from Whistle Stop). They would've detracted from the story flow and focus of the movie. Instead were a very nice bonus when I finally read the book for the first time.
I know I mentioned before I wish Fannie Flagg's other books were as good as this. I still wish they were. |
