I've been saying that the Bush administration is the most Orwellian I have seen in my lifetime, but since I last read this book in 7th grade, I figured I ought to reread it.
I don't have much to add that hasn't been covered a zillion times by this book. Unfortunately, after rereading it, my opinion of the Bush administration still stands. Granted, there are significant differences, but the doublethink and doublespeak and policy of unending war are scarily similar.
For some reason, almost nobody talks about those who benefit from war nor how they benefit, and that's why I believe this book should be required reading.
I went to the march on Washington against the war on January 27, and I found that, once again, the young people seem to be the most aware of the Orwellian nature of our current government. One teenager had a sign that read "We are at war with Iraq. We have always been at war with Iraq." On the other side of the sign, it read, "We are at war with Iran. We have always been at war with Iran."
Thanks, Mr. Orwell! |

The most Orwellian moment of the war to me:
Rush Limbaugh is making fun of a Democratic Senator for saying that she KNOWS that Iran has a plan to divide Iraq into two pieces, one of which would be a "Free terrorist zone." He's calling her loony, and silly, and stupid, and all that.
Then someone lets him know that it is actually a Republican Senator, the crazy lady from Minnesota. And he goes, "Ah, its a Republican... well maybe there is something to it" and he changes the subject shortly afterwards. |

That was Michelle Bachman. She's a congressperson, not a senator. She also had this weird photo op where she basically groped Dubya in front of a ton of people. She's nuts, but I hope she keeps it up. It'd be lovely if she wound up being a one-termer.
The new woman senator from Minnesota is Amy Klobuchar, she's cool. |
