Philip Pullman does such a great job of writing books for juveniles dealing with adult topics, and never writing down to his audience.
I could say I wish I'd found his books when I was in in junior high school (and high school), but it looks like his books didn't even exist until after I graduated high school. I'm just glad I found them now.
Anyway, this is the first in the Sally Lockhart trilogy. A teenager must find out the truth about her father's death, and retrieve his legacy to her, before she's killed by the people who don't want her to have either. I don't want to go into much more detail, or it will turn into spoilers.
It's like the old Nancy Drew mysteries, except it has much more danger, is set in Victorian-era England, and is much more believable.
I was lucky enough to find the entire trilogy sitting on the shelf at the library, so I grabbed them all and am looking forward to reading the next one. |
