Beach Music is sort of the ultimate Pat Conroy novel, in which he puts together all his favorite themes (suicide, violently abusive military dads, military schools, life in the South, family secrets, highly dysfunctional families, men in general, and insanity), and tops it off with a dollop of Vietnam and the Holocaust. He strings it together with his beautiful prose, and it doesn't feel TOO much like he's ripping himself off.
Overall, I liked it.
I think I might go re-read "The Prince of Tides". |
