i picked this up at a goodwill in new york because i liked the one irving book i had read (cider house rules) and had heard multiple rave reviews on this title.
that was in august, and it took me until january to begin reading it (hooray for post-op free time).
it was spectacular. an intense and demanding read, not to mention longish (617 pages). it took me a while to get into it, i'm not a huge fan of how irving does his exposition, but his books are always worth pushing through the dragging start. his characters are fantastical but genuine, and the stories are imaginative and enveloping.
i'd recommend this to readers who want an admirable story with impressive character development, and aren't afraid of persisting through slow beginnings to get there.

they say that the first step is the hardest part of a new journey...or something like that. here's hoping it doesn't take me over a month to get through book 2. |
