This book was interesting. It was given to me as a gift on a first date and I avoided reading it for a while due to my personal feelings about the person who gave it to me.
When I was packing two weeks ago for my vacation home to Ohio, I noted that I was left without a book (non-work related) to read on the plane. So I grabbed it and threw it in my bag, feeling that it had to be good enough to hold my attention through take-off.
It was good enough that it held my attention through to the conclusion - is a good story - fablistic and "epic journey" - ish in it's nature. I don't know that I would choose to purchase this book or others by the author for myself... as it's not my favorite style of writing, but I enjoyed reading it.
It is the journey of the Shepard Santiago as he follows the path of his "Personal Legand"... it holds morals and lessons which are of an obvious nature (live your life to the fullest, embrace love) and concludes a little too conveniantly for me.
The best portion of the book was last third after the boy Santiago meets the Alchemist and learns to communicate with the Soul of the World... I enjoyed the way the author brought nature and the cosmos to life via first person narration. It was poetic and had great, sweeping imagery.
I'd say a strong B on my scale.
