The other end of life, seen through the Mitford lens of solid research and a light touch.

Why and how did birthing women end up in the care of men? Midwives, while no longer burnt at the stake as witches, still can face some tough opposition from the OB/GYNs who see them as a threat. As long as they restrict themselves to the indigent mother-to-be, that's all fine and dandy, but when they start taking the paying patients, that means war. And all this is of course played out in the bizarre American medical system that seems specifically designed to waste money and exclude huge swathes of the population from getting even basic care.

Leave it to Jessica Mitford to jump in with both feet, following the red tape trails and trying to make some sense of it all. Highly recommended.
