A seminal work of feminism. (I've always wanted to use that phrase!)
This is an extended essay on the role of women in writing fiction.
The work is famous for introducing us to the fictional sister of William Shakespeare --- a woman gifted with exactly the same talent as her brother, but whose abilities are denied the outlets of expression given to her brother. She ends up never writing a word and committing suicide.
It's a short work, cogently argued though there is a tinge of 'classism' (poor people cannot possibly create great art). Women are called to let Shakespeare's sister "live in you and in me, and in many women who are not here tonight, for they are washing up dishes and putting the children to bed".
