Dead Man’s Tale by Ellery Queen
One of the best parts of going to visit my parent’s house in Houston is picking an old book off the shelf to read on the flight home. There are several Ellery Queen novels there and this is the one I picked this time around.
“Ellery Queen” was the pseudonym used by Manfred B Lee and Frederic Dannay. They were the Stephen King of their day. The books were hugely popular at the time, yet they were largely scorned by “serious” critics. Contrary to popular opinion, not all of them were whodunits, including this one.
Dead Man’s Tale packs a lot of stuff into one novel – a wealthy dying man with a will, a gold-digging wife, a mobster, a young innocent student, a mysterious Czech named Hacha, a number of exotic European locations, a blind man named Joost living in an old house with a “grand daughter”, and several plot twists. And all of this in only 127 pages!
I’m already looking forward to my next trip to Houston. |
