These are both rereads but I wanted to make sure Emma Bull ended up on this forum.
War for the Oaks is a fantasy and a romance novel, set in the Minneapolis of the 80s. Its form of fantasy involves the mythos of Faerie. One main character is a phouka. I like the plot twists, and I like how Bull describes every single article of clothing her main character chooses to wear, and I like having a good romance novel (not like the explicit grocery ones, but still) that's set in a fantasy.
Also, if you're a Mpls expat, it's fun to read it and set yourself back there for a bit. Good descriptions of favorite places, and the lyrics of one of the Flash Girls songs are in here, well before Bull started performing.
Bonedance is also a fantasy, though not a romance. I find it to be the more complex of the two, and more moving. It's harder to say its setting, but it's not Faerie, and it's sometime in the future. Again, Bull is good at describing the kind of details I like, such as what exactly the characters eat per meal. I just like that stuff.
Both of these books are of the feelgood, there are people out there who have it together and can get along, etc, variety that I like so much. |
