Well, I thought after reading Blue Angel this summer and likening it to a cheap Lolita rip-off that perhaps I should actually tackle the actual Lolita (as I'd only seen the movie version)... I guess I never realized how pedantic this story is.
Lolita is one of my boyfriend's favorite (top 5 of all time) books. I guess I understand why... in a literary context this is quite a remarkable work. The word play is amazing. Dolores Haze = dullerous haze, which is what our protagonist spends the book in, a dullerous haze.
The whole idea of grown men "loving" little girls is distasteful in of it's self. And, to that end Nabokov hits a home run with Lolita... the detail in which Humbert Humbert's desires for Lolita are described (over and over and over again) is sickening. I had to put down the book on several occasions. It's just all so sinister and depraved.
Humbert Humbert’s obvious and prolonged psychological torture seems like not enough penance for the crimes against women which he perpetrates throughout the slight 317 pages of this tome.
The book is so much more graphic than any of the movie versions of Lolita ever have been.
But, I suppose that's the point. Book is always more detailed and graphic, right?
Overall, I did not enjoy the book due to the topic (pedophila) - but, understood why it is a classic (excellence in writing). I give it a grudging B...
