Terry Pratchett is one of my favorite authors; not because he's deep or highly skilled (that has been disputed by certain friends), but because his books are fun to read.
This is the first I've found in a while that I haven't read, so I get to write it up. And all I can say is, I liked it. Terry's Discworld series are all similar in style, witty, silly, and full of completely undisguised parallels with literature, current events, and politics. They have a good number of recurring characters, and there are several interesting developments in this one regarding Captain Sam Vimes and his fellow policemen in the City Guard.
The Discworld series is not really one to cause deep thought, even when it's dealing with philosophy or religion. But they're insightful anyway, and you should read at least one. Either you'll be hooked or you won't, but it's worth reading one to find out. |

Just wondering if you live in the vicinity of Doug (I used to) and if so, where were you when I needed someone else who could back me up about Pratchett? (I've read all his books. Except for the big picture one with Josh Kirby (the one with Cohen the barbarian, I think... I was looking for it the other day, thinking of buying it, but I couldn't find it)) Btw, I don't know if you know this... But Josh Kirby's dead! He died in 2002. (He's the guy who did all the cool covers that you can find on the British/Canadian versions of the books.) Anyway, that's why the latest books have boring covers. Also, there's a discworld mud out there, if you're interested: telnet (or use a mud client) to discworld.imaginary.com 4242. You can find Pratchett's entire world there. They've followed the layout of the cities/worlds. You can also find a Hedgehog's song, the entire watch -- Angua does change into a werewolf, when the full moon's out or when capturing criminals. The other day she broke both my legs before throwing me in prison
Do you like Wodehouse too, by any chance? |

I have to confess ignorance of Wodehouse; similar style or subject?
I don't live near Doug, but apparently we both used to live in Mpls at around the same time, and didn't know it. I didn't know that Josh Kirby is dead, but I'm not sure if even that excuses those awful boring covers.
I'm not very experienced on the internet (I've been blaming technophobia but it's more like lack of computer to practice on), so I don't know what a "mud" is. Is it one of those chatroom-reminiscent online setups where you can choose your body and clothing and hair, and control your avatar walking through an imaginary world? Someday I will have a powerful, or at least young, computer. And I will play.
One of the guys at work likes Pratchett as much as I, and has been working on his own version of the Hedgehog song. He sings it sometimes. He may be interested in this. |
