I've read a number of Powers' books, starting with what is still my favorite, Last Call. Usually they give a feeling of unexplained unreality, which slowly develops into, well, explained unreality. They're often based on mythology, magic, spirituality, and superstition. They give the feeling of having been based on actual events and include many characters from literature, but then you find out that what a hypothetical history might have described as unusual was actually supernatural.
This book was not as captivating as I'm used to from Powers. I read several other books while trying to push my way through this one. It's very like a regular spy novel, but with the supernatural included from the start. It actually is based on true events, with Powers writing the plot within all of restrictions of the documentation of those events.
Still, I probably won't go out and buy a copy to read again later. [/i] |
