I've read this story dozens of times, but read it again because I found a copy that included illustrations by Maurice Sendak. How could I resist?
This is a good book for folks with a wry sense of humor and a love of fairy tales. MacDonald, a contemporary of C.S. Lewis, also has a tendency to leave traces of Christian allegory in his work; but this one is pretty clean of it. I'd say, if you have kids you may enjoy reading this one together. MacDonald's prose is quirky, like a fairly restrained Lewis Carroll, and in spite of its simplicity it's the slight freakiness of his work that makes it so re-readable. |
