This just proves my theory about me and reading on vacation... I expect to at least get through 1/2 of what is remaining in my "26 in 06"... cool.
But, onto the main event:
Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner
Despite my early predictions that this was a fluffy beach book (it is, sort of) -- I found this to be a great read... funny, with applicable life lessons for all women (as in: you should love yourself, etc.) with great things happening to our heroine (Cammie), some of which seemed to be horrible at first... and, a surprising twist at the end which is very poignant and made me a little teary.
The book starts off with our heroine, Cammie, (who recently told her boyfriend of three years, Bruce, that she wanted "a break") discovering that he has had an article published in a trendy women's magazine (think 'Jane') entitled "Loving a Larger Woman" -- about his relationship with her.
You would expect the rest of the book to be about her revenge upon him, or her strife to lose weight and end up with a fabulous boyfriend or some other vapid type "chick flick" scenario. To some extent that is what happens. Though, not quite.
This is a journey story - one of partying with movie stars, saving a "leading man" (Adrian Stahl from "Saturday Night!" -- who sang "The PTA Mother's Lament" -- sound familiar?) who is suspiciously similar to Adam Sandler, selling a screenplay, falling for the doctor at "Fat Class", unexpected pregnancy, love, loss and, yes, losing weight... only to gain it back again and find that she was fine with how she looked all along.
The main characters are well developed, funny, likeable and easily recognized in us all. And, the dickhead ex-boyfriend (Bruce) is more than likely identifiable to all women as some idiot-loser they have dated in the past.
Despite its general fluff - it is a worthy read. It is proclaimed upon the dust-jacket that it is a "New York Times Bestseller" -- and, I can understand why -- much in the way that the Bridget Jones or Candace Bushnell books are popular -- in addition with a little bit of something deeper.
I'd recommend it to anyone who has some spare time and no shame in being caught reading "beach books."
Next? Who knows -- off to peruse my parent's bookshelves. Stay tuned. _________________ HER ROYAL KATENESS, QUEEN OF ALL SHE SURVEYS |
