Full title: Travels With Charley In Search of America
This is such a pleasant, quick read that I had read about a quarter of it before I remembered to wonder if I liked it. If you enjoy road trips; if you like to check out all sorts of places and see who and what lives there, and what they're like; if you drive along thinking deep thoughts and doing fun or interesting things, and swear you're going to write some of them down when you get home; if you've done these things, I think you'll enjoy this book.
Steinbeck's trip was taken in late 1960, and he shares his thoughts on all the aspects of life that he approaches in his travels.
It is thoughtful, intuitive, and rambling, though not always cheerful and optimistic. Nevertheless it made me happy to read it. |

I "read" this as a book-on-tape when making a long car ride. It was wonderful. What was particularly amazing, to me, is how his comments on Minneapolis and Seattle could have been written today. It was also neat to me that even though I am not a dog lover, this book kept me interested in both him and his doggie. |
