A fine Ellery Queen mystery from 1953. Once more the authors play with structure. The chapters are labeled with the letters of the alphabet, each having its own meaning. There are only 8 characters, and 3 of them are Ellery, his secretary Nikki, and his father. The plot is quite simple and if you're not paying attention (as I wasn't) you can lose sight of what's really happening. The book is 178 pages long, but the murder doesn't occur until page 148. Well done.
