this was a surprisingly moving novel. following the survivors of a fourteen-year old girl after her rape and murder, following them from the first person perspective of the girl as she watches from heaven...Sebold wove the emotions of her characters around me like a blanket and i eagerly cocooned myself inside. when i began reading, i was worried that the story would be over-sentimental, cliche, predictable. while it did have its share of sentimentality, i still felt like i was reading a ghost story and never once did i confuse it for a greeting card. however, no predominantly cliche or predictable moments struck me during my reading, and the story's ending was actually a surprise.
all in all, a wholly satisfying read. |
