In 1929, two cousins in New York, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B Lee, entered a mystery writing contest. They won the contest with a book called "The Roman Hat Mystery."
"Roman Hat" is the first Ellery Queen book. To me, it's a work in progress. The characters are not fully formed, and the authors are clearly feeling their way around. In the preface, it states that "Ellery Queen" is a pseudonym, that Ellery and his father are already retired in Italy, that Ellery is married, and has a son, Ellery Jr!
As for the book, I found it disappointing in several ways. The problem is, I cannot give out any details of my opinions without spoiling things. I have to keep in mind that the book is the first in the series, and won't be as polished as the later works. I will say that the solution is not as airtight logical and satisfying as I'm used to. Also, there is one aspect of the solution that I find irritating. I won't say what it is, but it is the same complaint I've had about some of the other EQ Golden Age mysteries. |
