51. Ten Days’ Wonder by Ellery Queen (1948)
I’ve been meaning to slow down my reading, as my pile of unread Ellery Queen books is getting smaller these days. But I picked this one up late this afternoon and read it straight through with only one break for a meal. It’s marvelous. It doesn’t appear to be a whodunit. Ellery goes back to Wrightsville with a friend and gets involved in some local intrigue. But it turns out that all these odd events are interconnected.
Ellery’s solution is a humdinger. It also sets some kind of record, taking up a whopping 63 of the book’s 224 pages (!)
I’m glad I finally found a Wrightsville novel I liked. Also, this book was made into a movie starring Orson Welles in the early 1970s (my copy is a movie tie-in edition with 8 pages of pictures in it.)
