This continues the story of Katherine Forrester from the novel The Small Rain. Rather than continuing where The Small Rain left off, it picks up when she is just retiring from her career as a pianist. An old friend from her youth turns up and the story of each of their lives unravels. This novel even has a problem to solve - Katherine and her friend are both receiving harassing phone calls.
L'Engle still sticks to the self discovery themes, but there is a lot more to fill out this novel. We aren't just looking at the life of one character, instead we're looking at the lives and development of a few characters while trying to solve a problem. It's still not exactly an exciting novel, but I feel like maybe her writing style is fleshing out a bit.
On a side note - I tried to start reading Certain Women by L'Engle and it's just not going anywhere. Maybe it would if I gave it some more time, but the first 40 pages have been difficult to get through and now the book is due back at the library. I just don't think it's worth renewing, so I'll give up on this one. |
