Editing together snippets of poems, short stories, and interviews with writer Dorothy Parker, Barry Day constructs a pseudo auto-biography of this intriguing and all-too-human 20th century icon.
Probably best know for her sharp one-liners ("one more drink and I'll be under the host") Parker's contributions as a reviewer, poet, screen-writer, and author of the short story give a poinant view on life, love, death, and the niche of women as they emerged through the Jazz age, second World War, and the McCarthy Era.
While there are probably not many folks left who spout Dorothy Parker in moments of crisis, -
"Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong,
And I am Marie of Roumania"
The quotes alone would make this worthwhile reading. |
