| This compact volume on the American Civil War is tight, readable, and gave me an interesting comparison view while reading James M. McPherson's longer volume on the same era. Packard provides a more balanced view of the war era, and while he is not necessarily sympathetic to the Southern view, he seems to be less inherently critical of the southern culture and legal view that precipitated the conflict. |
