A collection of 16 short stories. Divided into three parts...and I'm not sure why. I don't get why the ones in Part One are sectioned differently than the ones in Part Two. But that's really beside the point.
I picked this up in a secondhand bookstore in Brooklyn one day, thinking nothing but "I should read more short stories" and "that's an interesting title." It was a very fast read. The stories range from the benign (A woman who wants to be a man making love to women) to the slightly weird (two burglars steal a ring that turns everything it touches the color of its ruby) to the just plain out-there (the imp who is hiding he's an imp in high school, and he has a crush on a girl who is really a mermaid...or the town where one girl has an ice hand and another girl has a fire hand, and when they hold hands, they have regular hands.)
Very strange, passionate, poetic stories. The style is striking, and I had a good time reading it. Sometimes it seemed like a story would end out of nowhere, but that's better than something going on much longer than it should. I'd like to read more by this author. _________________ I am a dirty liar. And I'm lying when I say that. |
