This offering from new name Castro is a murder mystery set in a space colony. The Diplomatic Corps sends Counselor Andrea Cort to investigate a murder of one of the humans studying a massive deep-space artificial ecosystem called One One One, created by ancient artificial intelligences called the AIsource. By the time she arrives, a second murder has occurred, under even stranger circumstances than the first. Suspects in the murders include the other humans on the station, engineered sentient creatures called Brachiators and the AIsource itself, whom Cort's superiors have instructed her must not be implicated. All the evidence seems to point toward the AIsource - and it looks like Cort will have to find a scapegoat or two to satisfy the Corps. But things are more complicated than that...
This is the first of a new series of books about Andrea Cort, a character with the requisite shady and traumatic past - but with several intriguing twists. It is well-written and engaging, bringing its otherworldly setting into vivid life. Good stuff. |
