49. The Tragedy of Z by Barnaby Ross (Ellery Queen) (1933)
What I like about these Ellery Queen whodunits is how thorough the authors are. They don’t undertake a book until they’ve thoroughly prepared the facts. The detective not only shows you who did it, but demonstrates why his solution is the only possible correct one. For this reason, the solutions sometimes go on for up to 40 pages. The proofs are as rigorous as anything you’ll find in higher mathematics. This is a fine, fine mystery, and I commend it to you all. |
