This is book 2 in the Twilight Saga.
In the beginning of the book, it's her birthday, and the vampire coven throws a party for her.
While she's unwrapping a gift, she gets a paper-cut, and the coven goes into hyperdrive trying to get away from her and the smell of the blood and the temptation.
As a result of their reaction, they leave the area, seemingly permanently.
[As a side note, apparently Bella never gets a period, because it seems that her boyfriend is always with her, except when he's hunting animals for food. Reality can only intrude so far into the series, and only when it's a useful plot device.]
After the coven is gone, and she leaves her room after an extended mourning period, she rediscovers a Native American friend of hers who briefly appeared in Book 1. He's grown up since then, and they spend time together becoming closer. Although he wants more than friendship, she's content to keep it at the friendship level, hanging out and doing stuff together.
Later on in the story, her new friend disappears for a while and she discovers he's been hanging out with a new group of friends - other boys on the reservation. Even later, she figures out that this new group of friends is a pack of werewolves, and he's one of them. The werewolves are naturally sworn enemies of the vampires, though a truce has been called because the coven doesn't hunt humans.
In the beginning of the book, a big deal is made out of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", and the author seems intent on recreating the story, right down to the rival families and Romeo's exile. She even makes sure the reader doesn't forget the parallels by having Bella going over the story in her head.
By the end of the book, she has tried to kill herself, and her lost love is in the process of planning his suicide, thinking she's dead. She learns this when one of the coven members shows up in her room and tells her what's going on.
She flies off to Italy, where he's about to go through with his plans, and shows up just in time to let him know she's still alive. The couple is reunited.
She returns home with the coven to a very disappointed werewolf, and the coven moves back into their old house, and life goes on.
She's still not a vampire, though by now she's let the coven know she reallyreally wants to become one. Her boyfriend doesn't want to change her, because he wants her to experience human life a little more beforehand.
When will she be changed? We may not know for at least 3 or 4 more installments in the series.
