The Audacity of Hope was written about a year after Obama was elected to the US Senate in 2004. Whereas Dreams From My Father was biographical, this book lays out his political philosophy.
I was impressed with how consistently he takes arguments from both the "left" and the "right" into account. He clearly states why he agrees or disagrees with them and develops an up to date liberalism. He manages to have an independent political philosophy while not writing off those who disagree with him.
He states right at the beginning that the book contains no "10 point proposals" and indeed, it stays fairly abstract and general throughout.
Although he's not perfect by any means, I still believe that he can beat my very low standard of being better than any other president in my lifetime. |
