A book about witchcraft c. 1978, before it was taken over by Wiccans.

It's a good overview of this, going into history and various practices. There's some detail, but not all that much. I will probably be reading other of her books, and I expect she would go into more specific detail on procedures, etc., in those.

I can see that this was an extremely influential book for other writers in the genre, based on the echoes I've seen in almost every other book written about witchcraft and Wicca.

In fact, in the intro she explains how she wrote this book in response to others' plagiarism of her earlier writings, and she wanted to set the record straight.

I didn't know there was witchcraft apart from Wicca.

I did a quick google on this, because it's not something I can easily put into words (I'm still learning the differences myself).

And looking at this page, it would appear Valiente's book is a sort of in-between mutant of Wicca and more traditional Witchcraft, since much of her influence is from Gerald Gardner. Apparently I still have quite a bit to learn. Smile
