42. What’s in the Dark? by Ellery Queen (1968)
There are six books in the “Tim Corrigan” series by “Ellery Queen.” I guess they were trying to create a new character. Tim Corrigan is a suave, gritty detective with an eyepatch. It’s a little corny, but this one works.
There’s a massive power outage in New York City. Just as the lights go out, someone apparently commits suicide in an accounting office. Tim happens to be nearby and shows up. The book does a nice job of depicting the nuisance and claustrophobia of having to spend the night in an office building without any power. The employees huddle together, while knowing that one of them is a killer.
Ghost written by the reliable Richard Deming. |
