A couple of apple reviewing notes:

All of my apple sampling has been done with raw apples at room temperature, but the apples came from many different places; grocery stores and farmers' markets and apple orchards in several different states.

In general, the best apples come straight from an orchard. After that, the sooner they get to you the better, making farmers' markets generally better than any grocery store. Of course, some apples are more inconsistent than others, and some survive the traveling better than others.
