Another classic kids' book, this one from 1905, by the author of The Secret Garden.
Sara Crewe is a pampered English girl, indulged to ridiculous extremes by her widowed father. At age 7, she leaves the familiar sights and sounds of India to be educated at a young ladies' seminary in London. But rather than turning into an insufferable brat, she appreciates her good fortune and is kind to everyone. Even when tragedy strikes, she soldiers on.
A bit dated and unbelievable, the story still stands up because of the writing. A quick and fun read. |
