This book is completely boring yet wholly useful. Designed more for business writing, we are using it this semester to help us sharpen our self-editing skills. The idea is that as journalists we should be concise, tight writers; and, that we need to eliminate our desire to hear our own voice in our writing.

| I remember a journalist in my Toastmasters club, years ago, who proudly showed me a story she wrote. It was good journalism, by which I mean there wasn't a single sentence I could point out and say, "What wonderful writing!" The writing was invisible. It made it very awkward to give her the praise on Her Writing that she sought. |

| Stylistic writing and concise ("invisible") writing are both useful and wonderful in their places. You just have to know where and when to use them. |
