This is the sequel to Wicked, Maguire's take on the characters of Wizard of Oz. Son of a Witch takes place after The Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) dies, and focuses on the life of Liir - the assumed son of Elphaba. He is her assumed son because no one knows, one way or the other, if he is her son.
I was surprised again by how enthralling Maguire's writing is. Before I start reading one of his books, I always think to myself that it's just an author playing with the characters from some fairy tale, and that it's bound to be boring or nonsensical. But once I start reading, I realize that he really creates a world when he writes. And they definitely aren't novels for kids. This book dealt with poverty, war, relationships, sex, identity issues, and corrupt government.
The one thing is that I wish I had reread Wicked before starting this one. I felt that there were some things I was a little bit lost about because I had forgotten some of the details from Wicked. There were a few times where something specific from Wicked was discussed, but a lot more times where I could tell something from the past was being referenced, and I just couldn't remember the details. So, this book is a lot of fun, but make sure you've got Wicked under your belt first! |
